Transforming Cartagena from Ancient into Modern

Cartagena lies on the south eastern side of Spain with a rich history that seeps out from every wall in the city. Cartagena is best discovered through a leisure stroll to soak in the beauty offered through its culture and history.

Historical moments

It was the Carthaginians who set up this city in 223 BC with the name Quart Hadas or ‘new city’. Hannibal succeeded Hasdrubel as commander with a greater success than the former. Cartagena became the Carthaginian capital with its strategic harbor position that offers safety from numerous large and rocky landscapes.

However, that could not prevent the Romans from conquering Cartagena in 209 BC. The Romans renamed Cartagena to Carthago Nova with the meaning ‘new carthage’. The Byzantines conquered Cartagena with the Arabs close at their heels. Hence, Cartagena has been richly impacted by the various cultures that shaped it to this day.

Fame

Cartagena became famous as a successful commercial port with its strategic location and deepwater facility. It was renowned for its myriad of marine activities. Today, it is one of Spain’s key ports in commercial economy while serving as a naval base.

The first submarine was received at Cartagena port in 1884 and has remained at the quayside as a tourist piece since then. Cartagena is fortunate to have plenty of metallic ores and minerals to be mined for supporting its economic status.

Historical sights

Cartagena offers many historical sights for the tourists; these include the Roman theatre from the first century which the Romans used to enjoy many fine arts performances. There is also Litema, an ancient Arab-built lighthouse that lies in ruins.

One of the best archaeological sites in Cartagena is Augusteum. One can appreciate the rich Spanish culture as well as the ancient architecture that is unique and outstanding in form and skills. This site was purportedly where Emperor Augustus met with his priesthood cult.

There are plenty of half day excursions around Cartagena in open top buses to view the best of Cartagena but a deeper appreciation of the ancient remains and architectural buildings are best discovered on foot.

Progression

Cartagena has blossomed into a successful commercial city today with modern amenities and luxurious resorts that are drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Shopaholics would love the myriad of shopping opportunities from large shopping malls to quaint local craft shops. Visitors would enjoy the plethora of water sports at Cartagena with interesting marine life discoveries.
